Task Manager functionality vanished?

Lately in one of my PCs, I noticed that the functionality of the task
manager is gone as when I right click the bottom part of the desktop
screen, its place is where its located is already shaded.
It was the result of recent severe malware infection where it had to
be disinfected .That PC is run by WinXP Pro( SP1)
I can’t find the system restore area in that PC and is reluctant also
that if I had to roll it back to the previously good known
configuration, it might bring back some malware infection.
Is there a way how to recover it?
TIA
Roy

It's probably not your preferred solution but a Windows reload would fix it.

Hi Roy,

Download and install Windows XP Service Pack 2.

Besides, you can't get any updates without Service Pack 2 being
installed.

Security FAQ & Checklist

Thanks for the reply guys!

When I tried to download from the given link
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=049c9dbe-3b8...
It says the download for this site is only for developers and not for
ordinary users that want only to install the update on one PC.
What the heck is microsoft making it difficult to ordinary users to
download the service pack when from how I see it the direct download
and installation of the full service pack 2 is more simple.?
Besides that Pc is just an ordinary home Pc used by my mother for her
internet use.
I don't think I have to go to greatlenghts to wipe out the hard drive
and reinstall the OS then follow it up with service pack upgrades?
What is the difference from the techie viewpoint of just installing
the service pack 2 instead of the following the complicated windows
update way on the single home pc.?

Another question , is the service pack 2 is installed would it cure
the problem about the vanished task manager?

I would be pleased to hear more input regarding this issue...
Thank You!
Roy

Hi Roy,

Nothing difficult for obtaining that Service Pack 2, I pointing to.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...be-3b8e-4f30-8245-9e368d3cdb5a&displaylang=en

Ignore this: DO NOT CLICK DOWNLOAD IF YOU ARE UPDATING JUST ONE
COMPUTER:

Download the Service Pack 2 and save it in your Briefcase Folder. To
save the XP Service Pack 2, to install at a later time, if necessary, burn
it to a CD-R disk using Nero or a like program.

After the download is complete, go to Start then Run and type in
msconfig. Click OK.

Click Services Tab. Check Hide All Microsoft Services. Click Disable
All. Click Startup Tab. Click Disable All. Click Apply. Click OK. Click OK
through all errors, if McAfee is installed. Click Restart.

On restart or reboot, go back to msconfig and dot Normal Startup. Click
Apply. Click OK through all errors. Click Exit without Restart.

Open Briefcase Folder. Find the download and highlight it. Click it and
follow onscreen instructions for installing the Windows XP Service Pack 2
Upgrade.

Do not install Windows XP Service Pack 3, before installing all the .Net
Frameworks versions including .Net Framework 3.0 because it will not install
at all if attempting to install after installing Windows XP Service Pack 3.

Better to install Windows XP Service Pack 3 after installing all .Net
Framework versions, for peace of mind and my experiences with it.

Click Finish when done and reboot.

Hi Roy,

To be honest. I don't know, but you do need Windows XP Service Pack 2
for continue access to Windows XP Hotfixes. And installing Windows XP
Service Pack 2 may fix your problem, without jumping through hoops. You
don't know without trying and if it fixes the problem, then you killed two
birds with no stone, so to speak.

Hello Kelly
Thank you very much for the information links that you gave!
I will give it a try soon...
I really had some nagging issues with WinXP that I did not realize
earlier
Another issue that bogs me is when I boot up one of my PCs it says
before the WinXP icon appears, in blue screen , finished checking the
disk so and so but cannot find the file.
I remember last time it happened was that I sticking my USB hard
drives to the computer and forgot to remove it when I shut it down,
Then then next time I rebooted , there that pesky reminder keep
appearing during the start....
Are you familiar with these issue.....?

Roy
