I am using XP Pro.

When I turn the computer on the User Account login screen
appears, but when I click on either of the two user
accounts it takes much longer than normal and I then get
an error message that states " Microsoft Task Manager has
encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry
for the inconvenience."

The Error report includes App and Mod Names "userinit.exe"
and App and Mod Ver "5.1.2600.1106" and Offset "00014007".

I can send the error message report to Microsoft, but the
computer then logs off the internet and I am left with my
desktop screen with no task bar and no program icons.

The start key on the keyboard does not work and pressing
ctrl+alt+delete generates the same error message.

I can only turn the computer off by turning the power off
and then the same thing happens.

The same thing happens if I try to boot in safe mode.

Any suggestions?

Many thanks

Hi,

Common issue as of late. This stems from spyware and cleaners. The problem
is that the Winlogon userinit entry is being set to "wsupdater.exe," and not
"userinit.exe,".

You can either opt to slave the drive and use the steps provided here to
correct with the information listed below it:

Editing the Registry for "other" Users
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_adv_reg_editing.htm

Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon.

In the right pane under Userinit, Change the key to read:
C:\Windows\System32\Userinit.exe,

Or download and run the reg file on line 263 (right hand side)

Or:

Place your XP CD in and navigate to the Recovery Console.
Change the C:\Windows prompt to: C:\Windows\System32 and copy userinit.exe
to wsaupdater.exe

Reboot into Safe Mode and modify:

change userinit in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon from wsaupdater.exe, to userinit.exe,

Provided that you have a 'proper' XP CD, not one of the OEM restore ones
that came with a new machine, set the BIOS to boot CD before Hard Disk.
Boot the XP CD and, instead of Setup, take the immediate R for Repair.
Assume any password requested is blank, and TAB over.

Give
Expand D:\i386\userinit.ex_ C:\windows\system32\userinit.exe
and while about it I would also expand winlogon.ex_ to winlogon.exe and
logonui.ex_ to logonui.exe
in the same folders
