task manager disappears

When I Ctrl+Alt+Del for the task manager or if right
click the task bar & select Task manager the problem
occurs. The Task Manager opens then disappears in about
5 seconds. In the notification area the task manager
icon is shown as a green square instead of the typical
green & black check. The icon disappears at the same
time as the actual window. What could be causing this?

This behavior can be caused by a virus. One of two:
