I tried that repeatedly but unsuccesfully. Any other advice? Thanks.

Check to see if the QuickLaunch (Right of Start button) has gone to two
lines? Drag the small "dotted" divider up to one line and then try to narrow
the task bar...
Or is the task bar locked? (RClick and uncheck)

If you couldn't get the double arrows on the mouse pointer you may have the
Taskbar Locked.

Look at:

Start
Settings
Task Bar and Start Menu
Task Bar tab
Uncheck "Lock the Task Bar"

Now use the mouse pointer, double arrows, drag down.

Now go back and lock the Task Bar to keep it the way you want it.

Thank you, Don. That took care of my problem.
