Running win xp and anti-virus. While running anti-virus, at some point it
takes my lower task bar out. Without that, it appears I have no way to
control what happening. I end up having to shut the pc down and restart by
manual switch.

Is there some simple thing I can do to bring the task bar back?

Do the 'restore' from the Help & Support in the Start menu. Just go backward
the previous restore point to get back to the previous setting. My taskbar
always no-show the division bars that allow my working windows to appear. I
simply do not know how to switch from one working window to the other, even
when my Inbox of Outlook is still running. I share that frustration. Hope
this will help other than using a software.
I still believe there is alternate way, that is why I pop into this group.

Colin and W had good advice, but ... those are bandaids. You really
need to figure out what's removing the task bar. Either you have
accidentally set something to remove it in a 3rd party app, or you have
malware doing it or malware associated with the task bar.

Which AV are you using? Describe the how/when of the task bar
disappearing.
Detail what malware/spyware products you're using. How often/when was
it all last updated?
