Task Bar Expands to 3 Lines.

This has been the week for abnormalities on my machine. WinXP SP3.

This morning, I inadvertently dragged the right edge of the Quick Launch
section over to the Notification Area. At that point, the complete taskbar
expanded vertically to 3 lines and showed the clock as time, day name
(Friday) and the date. I couldn't get it back to the normal one line by
putting the mouse cursor on the top of the taskbar and moving it down. I
would expand up but not reduce down. (Yes, the cursor did change to the
double arrow as usual.)

The task bar is not locked. Changing the properties to not show the clock
or the Quick Launch buttons did not fix the problem nor did unchecking any
of the other things in the properties window. Rebooting the system did no
good either. System Restore fixed it but I lost some things I had on the
desktop. I know how to avoid that loss in the future but I wonder if there
is someway to restore the task bar to it normal, one line, setup without
using system restore?

Thank you very much.

What happens is that the end "margin" of the QuickLaunch toolbar has gotten
so far over to the right that it is now down below. Unlock the Taskbar and
then "grab" the dotted line on the bottom bar and drag it up to immediately
to the right of the QuickLaunch icons. Now you've successfully made the
QuickLaunch toolbar shorter and can "grab" the top bar of the Taskbar and
"push" it down to the regular one-tier height.

Ah, the spirit of Alex Nichols continues. Thank you very much for the
clear, simple, explanation of what happened and how to fix it. This is not
the first time you have supplied such answers to questions in the group and
I, for one, really appreciate it.

That's quite a compliment and I thank you for it. Alex continues to be one
of my heroes; his passing doesn't change that for me. Glad this sorted
things for you and thanks again for the very kind words.
