takes forever to install anything more than 1 cd

hello
am wondering what could be the reason as to why comp takes ages to install
anything over 1 cd. eg had to reinstall one of my games (5 cd's) and has
taken 3hrs + to install it. 3 new cd/dvd roms in it ,currnet drivers and
updates . has been into shop a few times and nothing check as wrong or
faulty. anyone know what i could do to speed things upa bit? settings wise or
anything?
running win xp home ,p4 1.6 ghz, 1gig ddr ram

Go to Device Manager and look at the IDE controllers the optical drives
are on. Check the Advanced Settings tab. What is the transfer mode?
If PIO rather than DMA then that could be one cause. The system will
step down from DMA to PIO if there are errors. To restore them remove
the controller from device manager, reboot and let windows redetect it.
