TAKE OFF LINE NUMBERING

My Word 2003 has line numbering as a default. I would like to turn off line
numbering as a default and only use when needed. How do I do this?
 
In Word, click on File | Page Setup | Layout | Line Numbers | uncheck the
"Add line numbering" box | OK | Default | Yes | OK. If you are prompted to
save changes to your Normal.dot global template when you exit Word, say yes.
