Tables - Need guidance for very simple table, what PX?, etc.

K.C. NEWMAN

Hi - I've been struggling trying to compose a very simple table. Either some
parts shrink to miniscule dimensions or other parts enlarge to be so wide I
have to scroll to see it all. All in all, it looks pretty grotesque.

It really is a simple table that I want [L,C,R = alignment of that cell]:

FIRST ROW - 3 cells (15%L, 70%C, 15%R)
SECOND ROW - same as above, but center 70% consists of 4 cells of equal
width
THIRD ROW - Nested Table (7=rows X 6=columns; 1st row Sun-Sat is constant;
other rows are updated w/ text)
FOURTH ROW - 3 cells (15%L, 70%C, 15%R)
FIFTH ROW - 1 cell (100%C) } Nested
SIXTH ROW - 3 cells (25%C, 25%C, 50%C } table?

http://www.tampamediator.com/04/Mar04.htm is basically what I want (sans the
address info along the top) but it's so small! I want something that will
use 100% of the viewer's browser, yet I want the calendar cells to remain
equal sizes. I don't care if they grow or diminish, as long as all 7 columns
remain equally wide.

Can anyone help me compose such a table and perhaps answer questions such
as:
(1) If using fixed PX width, what's the best size?
(2) Why was I born stupid?

Thanks.

mind:

Hi, Tom (et al.)

QUESTION #1: If I want a table of 5 rows and various cells as described
earlier, would I

(a) Table / Insert / Table... - 5 rows, 3 columns ... and then 'merge' the
3 cells into one on those rows where I just need one cell?
(b) Table / Insert / Table... - 5 rows, 1 column ... and then 'split' the
cell into three on those rows where I need three cells?

It doesn't sound to me like it would make a difference, but I mean to tell
you I'm having a heck of a time. Everything looks good and when I preview
it, some of the 'nested tables' are about 1" wide with cells of about 1/4"!

QUESTION #2: For either (a) or (b), above, what should I set the initial
table width to?
(a) Use 100%? (which is 100% of what?)
(b) Use fixed pixel width (which would be _____?)

Thanks -

Really Tom, you're so good!!

Two questions:
(1) Advice as to how wide I would make that preliminary 5 row/3 column
table? Should it be a certain fixed pixel width? I'd like it to fill the
screen of whomever's viewing it, but if not, I'd like it wide but not so
wide that someone has to scroll to see it all. (Not that they'd miss
anything.)
(2) When I manipulate cells (split or merge, for instance), and then opt to
CENTER the contents, why would the 'center' be off ... appearing at perhaps
the 25% 'line' rather than the 50% 'line'? Happens all the time, and I know
it's due to pilot error ... one of many.

Thank you so much for your help. Really. If you ever think your help is
insignificant (because it comes so easily to you or you're repeating the
most banal and simplistic instructions), you would be wrong. You are
personally responsible for brightening others' days.

If you want the table to fit the user browser window, set the width using %,
such as 100%, 90%, etc.

Select the cell and fix the width value, ie.,

row 1, 4 cells:

25% 25% 25% 25%

row 2, 3 cells

25% 50% 25%
