Table of Contents

I have created my own formatting for the table of contents. Is there a way
to make my styles the TOC defaults? I've named my styles "PWSTOC 1, PWSTOC
2, etc." but I cannot find a way to make them the default style. I had to
name my styles with my initials because my report (approx. 2000 pgs) is
inserted into another report and when it is inserted it takes on the TOC 1
format of the report it is inserted into. I tried locking my TOC which works
pretty good but every time I regenerate the TOC because of adding a new
table, page, etc., I have to apply my styles again and again. We have
resigned to joining reports, which can be as much as 5000 pgs as PDF files so
my TOC does not change.

No, the auto TOC uses only Word's built-in styles, but there's no reason you
can't modify them to match your custom styles.

I have modified the default TOC but when my report is pulled into another
Word report my TOC takes on their TOC styles that have not been modified like
my styles.

If you want to preserve your formats, do it the other way around: Instead of
copying your text into the other document, copy the contents of the other
document into your document.

By default, if styles conflict, Word uses the style definitions of the
target document. Unique styles will be preserved (that is, styles that do
not exist in the target) as well as direct formatting. To force your
settings, you can paste as "Unformatted Text" (via the Paste Special dialog
box).
