Help!
My employer had a document prepared. The table of Contents is OK except for
one item. All the items have correct page numbers, the first item is a
letter. It is an upper case " I " it should be a lower case " i ", no
quotes. How do I change the " I " into a " i "? I have been assigned to do
this, please help.

look at the formatting of your headings.

1. ctrl-shift-s
2. select heading1
3.modify
4. format
5. numbering
6. numbered or numbered outline tabs
7. click a box other than "none" (don't know what box to recommend)
8. customize
9. number style

Um, don't do that. I think the poster is worried about page numbers, not
outline numbering, which is what Richard's instructions are for.

View Header/Footer. Put the cursor where the I is. Click the icon with a #
and a hand, for Format Page Number. Change the number format from I, II,
III to i, ii, iii.

Richard, thanks
I was unsuccessful trying to use your instructions.
I must be missing something. Can you be more specific.

Daiya, thanks
I was also unsuccessful using you instructions.
The item I need to change is in the Table of Contents.
Can your instructions be more specific.
The " i " in the Table of Contents doesn't appear in the Header & Footer?
Doe "put" mean to select, it won't allow me to do that?

Correction on previous reply should read;
The " I " in the Table of Contents doesn't appear in the Header & Footer?
not
The " i " in the Table of Contents doesn't appear in the Header & Footer?
Sorry 'bout dat!

Whether the page number is printed on the page or not, it has a format. If
it is appearing in the TOC as I, II, III, then you need to go to Format Page
Number and change it to i, ii, iii.

On the page that is numbered i (even if the number is not printed on it),
View | Header and Footer. On the Header and Footer toolbar, click the Format
Page Number button and change the number format to i, ii, iii, OK out of
that dialog, and Close to exit the header/footer. Then select the TOC and F9
to update the page numbers.

But if the text of the TOC entry for this page is in All Caps, I think the
TOC also shows an i page number as I, because the page number is also in All
Caps. Maybe that is the problem.

Ben, is it right on the page but wrong in the TOC?

S

Suzanne S. Barnhill

Ah, I missed that. I guess I don't ever have front-matter items at a heading
level for which I'm using All Caps formatting in the TOC (and it would be
hard for Ben to tell on the page because the page number is not appearing on
the page, though he could look at the status bar, I suppose).

Hi All
The TOC does not have a page number. The first numbered page is the first
page following the TOC. It shows correctly as an " i ", The TOC shows that
page to have an " I ".
Thanks, I am printing all this out so I will then try to follow it.
You may get a kick out of my way of fixing this. I inserted a small text
box, white fill, no lines, with an " i ' within, and covered the" I "
