Table of Contents entries generate 'right to left'

I am using Word 2003 (Windows XP) at work. I set up the TOC using styles and
when I generate the TOC some entries read 'right to left' but not all of
them. It doesn't matter what 'level' the heading is - it is not consistent
(see example below).
Page
Introduction .................................... 1
2 .............................................Companies
3 .............................................Location
Description .........................................4

I noticed it started doing this about a month or so ago. About that time, I
had helped someone at work with the above problem and now my computer does
the same thing. I have not had a problem in the past with generating TOCs.
Thank you.

Usually, something like this indicates some kind of "Asian" mode has been
activated on the machine. Go to START/PRograms and locate the folder for
Microsoft Office. In that you should find an entry for Microsoft Office Tools,
and in there one for Language Settings. Check the list of enabled languages andd
remove any you don't want to use.

Cindy,
I tried it and it didn't work. I selected the TOC and did CTRL Q - it fixed
level 2 headings but not level 1 headings. Do you have any more suggestions?
Thank you.

Out of curiosity: Did you find any Asian languages listed?

The formatting in the TOC is controlled by styles such as TOC1, TOC2, etc.
Display the Styles and Formatting task pane. Open the list at the bottom and
choose "Custom". Locate "TOC1" in the list at the top and activate the
checkmark so that it appears in the taskpane.

Right-click TOC1 and choose "Modify". Make sure "Left alignment" is selected
(and not right-aligned).

Cindy,
I found 2 Chinese languages listed and deleted them. I am not at work now
but will try what you said and let you know.

Cindy,
I checked the task pane (custom) and both TOC1 and TOC2 are left aligned.
Is there anything else I can check? Would reloading Word on my computer
help? I set up another TOC at work tonight and the same problem occurred --
CTRL Q fixed TOC2 but not TOC1.

Try starting Word in Safe Mode, to go back to the installation defaults, by
holding the CTRL key when you start it. Then try setting up a TOC in the new
document that appears.

If this Toc is "correct", try renaming your Normal.dot template to
NormalOLD.dot, start Word and test again in a new document.

Cindy,
It worked! I set up a sample document with a TOC with 3 levels and it
generated correctly. I actually had to set up a TOC for a real document with
2 levels and that generated correctly too. I am so glad you stuck with me to
fix the problem, THANK YOU (also thanks from the IT people at work).
