Table level record tracking

I have a bunch of tables that have a field in them to track the date of last
edit. Basically, when the informatio on a form changes, the Last_edit field
defaults to the current date and time. This is working great on the forms.

My problem is how to get the field to update automatically when someone
bypasses the forms and changes a record directly in the table.
