Table jumps two subsections

Using Word 2002: I have created a 6 x 8 table in a new document,
populated it and captioned it. My intent is to copy it into a large
document I am creating. I figure that by creating the table in a
separate document I could experiment with settings, appearance, font,
etc. get it right and then just place it in the larger document.

In the larger document, the table is to be pasted under the proper
subheading which is 3/4 down the page but does not have enough room to
contain the table, so I would expect the table to start on the next
page. The problem is when I copy and then paste in to the larger
document, the Caption goes where it is supposed to (I had the caption
positioned at the top of the table) but the table is placed two
subsections later. I've used Styles for headings, lists, etc, wherever
I could in the large document and I'm trying to use Styles as mush as
possible. The only way I was able to get things to work was to put a
page break just ahead of the subsection that the table was being
placed. Now the subsection title, caption, and table appear correctly
and in order in the document on the next page.

I don't understand why the caption didn't stick with the table and what
could possibly be making the table print on the next page TWO
SUBSECTIONS LATER!!

Your input and comments would be greatly appreciated.

I undid the pasting of the table then went into the large document and
did a Table/Insert with auto adjust and everthing worked out fine.
Even split the table if I wanted. If you know off-hand why the paste
idea didn't work I'd still apprecieate a reply. Right now it's not an
issue with me.

Thanks

Tables can indeed behave very weirdly (especially in Word 2000 and above).
If I'm reading your description correctly, I wonder if the table perhaps got
pasted floating (wrapped).
