tab key not inserting indent

Hi! I am using Word XP for a term paper. On the "works cited" page, the proper format (if a cited work is more than one line long) is to have the first line flush with the left margin and the second and subsequent lines indented. My problem is (if I am entering a lengthy entry) when a cited work automatically goes to the next line, I am unable to ident that subsequent line using the tab key. I am also unable to use the space bar (instead of the tab key) to indent those subsequent lines. Does anyone have any suggestions? I hope I explained my problem clearly enough.

This is called a hanging indent.
Right click the paragraph Select paragraph > indents & spacing > indentation
special (select Hanging) > by (select amount of indent).
Then with the cursor still in that paragraph, Format > style (or styles and
formatting depending on Word version) New - give the style a name, check the
add to template box, and OK out of that.
Apply this style to any paragraphs you want indented.
Save normal.dot when prompted on closing.

Click anywhere in your paragraph, make sure you are in Print Layout mode
(under View menu), on the left hand side of the ruler are two little "home
plate" looking things and a small rectangle. Click on the bottom home plate
(not the rectangle) and drag your mouse over to the 1/2 marker. Not you
have your paragraph "wrapped" with an indent.
