Tab, how to set in Customize Outline Numbered List

T

Tom Duprex

I am running Word97.

I need some help in setting up a tab in the Customize Outline Numbered
List (which I get to by going to Format/Bullets and Numbering, clicking
on the Outline Numbered I want then clicking on Customize). In the
lower left portion of the Customize Outline Numbered List window there
is a "Follow number with:" entry and the three selections are
Space,Nothing, or Tab Character. I want more that a single space and
would like to set that tab character to about 3 or 4 spaces. Is it
settable? If so how/where. As it stands it seems to be set at about a
half a page. This ends up making the page number when doing a Table of
Contents go to a next line.

TIA

See http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html. The
Customize Outline Numbered List dialog has settings for "Number position"
and "Aligned at," which determine where the number will be, "Tab space
after," which sets the tab stop following the number, and "Indent at," which
sets the hanging indent. Usually the last two will be the same, so that
runover lines will align with the tab after the number. If your numbers are
left aligned and will grow to double or triple digits, you must allow enough
space between number and tab stop so that the text will not be pushed to the
next tab stop. In an ordinary paragraph, this will be the next built-in tab
stop; in a TOC it will be the right tab stop at the right margin that
positions the page numbers.

Suzanne:

I'm a bit confused: I'm using Word97 and there is no Tab Space after,
and Indent at that appears in my Customize Outline Numbered List
screen. If not on that screen, where do they appear in Word97?

Word 97 doesn't have separate settings for these, assuming they will be the
same. A tab stop is automatically set at the "Indent at" position, so you'll
need to make the indent large enough to allow for your longest numbers
(unless you right-align them, in which case the calculations are a bit
different).
