This one has driven me mad. System restore creates a restore point but all
dissapears after reboot. I have none. I have checked that the facility is on
and have allocated maximum space. Any ideas?

Open the System Restore feature again. In the left hand panel, click
System Restore Settings. Now see if the System Restore is checked
in the Shutoff block. Uncheck it, click Apply and OK.

Hi Julian,

There are several reasons this may occur. Let's take a look at Event
Viewer for any System Restore logs that may have been created recently
that may help us diagnosing the problem.

Go to Start - Run and type eventvwr.msc and press enter.
Click on System in the left pane.
Click the gray title "Source" at the top of the source name column in
the right pane to sort by source name, look for "sr" and "srservice".
Double click on each of these events, then click on the button below the
two arrows in the upper right corner. This will copy the event
information to the clipboard. Paste the information for each of the two
event here. There's no need to post duplicate Event ID's.

How do I use the Event Viewer to search for System Restore logs?

There's a good chance this is being caused by a drive/partition that has
very little free disk space. If any monitored drive/partitions free
space falls below 50mb's, all monitoring by System Restore will be
stopped and all existing restore points will be deleted. Monitoring of
System Recovery Partitions is a common cause. Set System Restore to only
monitor the partition Windows is installed on. This may be enough to fix
the messing restore point issue.

Thanks that was helpful. It has taken me a few steps firther. However it has
not solved the problem. Under "sr" I get an error icon and when opened the
following message.

The System Restore filter encountered the unexpected error '0xC000000D'
while processing the file 'OBR3.ini' on the volume 'HarddiskVolume1'. It has
stopped monitoring the volume.

Mmm. Any ideas?

Thanks

Hi Julian,

Yes this is helpful.

Have you stopped System Restore from monitoring all drives/partitions
other than the one Windows is installed on?

How to disable a monitored drive:
http://bertk.mvps.org/html/drivedisable.html

Do a search of the entire system for OBR3.INI. I suspect you will find
it on a partition other than the one Windows is installed on. If this is
correct, stopping SR from monitoring it will fix the problem. If it is
located on the Windows partition please provide the entire path of the
file.

Bert

Mmm this is now getting interesting. I have disabled monitoring all
drives/partitions except the C: drive. I have searched the whole system
(including all hidden files etc.) and cannot locate the OBR.INI file.I have
tried zero BR as well as 'O' BR (just in case) and listed all the 'INI' files
on my C: D: and E: drives (partitioned drive and an extra hard drive on the
system.

Yet the errer messge relating to this file is still created.

Curiouser and curioser said Alice.

Any further thoughts?

PS I bet you is is something ludicrously simple that I have not done!

Regards

Julian

Yes this is strange, but shouldn't you be looking for OBR3.ini ? Did
you have the first three options checked in Search - More advanced
options? Try searching on *.ini .

Hi Bert.

Yes I have tried them all. OBR.ini, O*.ini, *.ini and variations inbetween.
I even cut and paste the relevant part from the sr message error into the
search. Now here is an interesting thing, when I shut down windows I have to
do it twice. I usually use the keyboard i.e windows 'u' 'u' but this happens
by the mouse method too. The computer starts to shut down but hangs at the
desktop. Repeating the process shuts everything as normal. Could rhis be
significant? Because of problems in the new year (even though I am firewalled
and run constant anti-virus and spam software) I had to use a full system
backup and restore the machine to factory settings. Could this be of
significance?

Sorry to be a pain!

Julian
