System restore problem

I was doing a noton AV update and my sytem locked up upon rebooting all
programs now have a .lnk extension and will not run. System restore wizard
included, it will not start. I have tried a restore to last know good point
on boot up but it didn't change anything. How can I either get the restore
wizard working or restore to an earlier point without the restore wizard.

never ever rely on System Restore for a backup unless its in Vista.
System restore only backs up your registry, and the chances are that its
restored your previous registry but Norton anti-virus (which may I say is one
of the most troublesome virus program, If I were you, get another one) is
still malfunctioning when it loads, my suggestion, if you have a backup, is
to fresh reinstall only don't install Norton, if you wat free virus go for
AVG Free Edition, if you want a great paying virus proggram then get CA
Antivirus 2007. if you don't have a backup, you'd have to ask a computer
friendly friend who could help you since i'm not right next to your computer

Cheers,

See if you're able to launch System Restore by typing this command in Start/Run dialog:

%SystemRoot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

If not, see:

How to start the System Restore tool at a command prompt in Windows XP:

In future, use ERUNT (freeware) to backup the registry. ERUNT can create a daily registry hive backup to a folder of your choice. The old backups are purged automatically on a FIFO basis.

Thanks, but I still couldn't get system restore to run. Trying it from run
said it couldn't associate it with a program. When I tried it from the
command line in safe mode, the restore screen came up but it was blank. Any
other suggestions

Paul,

Click Start, Run and type COMMAND.COM

Type these two commands:

regsvr32 jscript.dll
regsvr32 vbscript.dll

Type Exit to return to GUI.

See if the System Restore issue (blank window) is fixed.

When I typed in Command .com in the run box I get the message. "this file
does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create
an association in the floder Options control path"

Paul,

It looks like the .COM associations are corrupt, as well. Or this may be due to incorrect registry permissions entirely.

At this point, I'd try restoring the registry hives from one of the System Restore snapshot store folders. The following article tells you where the folder is, and how to access the contents. Use this article as example.

How to recover from a corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP from starting:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545

*Be sure to backup the existing hives to a safe location first.*
