No, systray was not the System Notification Area (or System Tray) itself.
Here's a quotation about Systray in alt.windows98, back in 2000, by Peter
Forrest. "Contrary to its name, it does not provide the system tray. That
service is provided by the explorer shell itself. Systray.exe is required by
Battery Meter, PC Card Status, Volume Control, Quickres and Task Scheduler.
Loaded when required only."
