Greetings --

This can be caused by a blank entry, such as can be left behind by
an incomplete program removal, in the
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and/or
HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run keys.

Hi,

Go to Start/Run/msconfig/Startup.

If this is the case go to Start/Run/Regedit:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Look here for the program/folder in question. If listed, double click the
entry and put the full path name in quotes. And Verify that all the values
in these keys do not contain any incorrect, incomplete, or null entries
(such as "").

Kelly, a computer I am supporting is exhibiting the same problem.
Based on earlier posts regarding the same problem, I have already
checked the two "Run" folders in the registry. There were a few
entries that contained spaces and no quotes. I corrected these.
There are now no entries with spaces in the filename/file path. There
are a few with arguments after the quote following the filename. The
System32 folder still opens on startup. I have also looked in the
User and All Users startup folders and checked the entries there for
similar problems and found none. What else could be causing the
System32 folder to continue opening on startup? Thanks!

Problem corrected, Kelly. I used MSCONFIG to determine the problem
startup item. Turns out it was an entry with a leading space.
Couldn't see the space in either MSCONFIG, MSINFO32, or Regedit. Only
found the space when I opted to save the registry entry via Regedit's
save function. When I viewed the output of the save function, the
leading space was clearly displayed. So, using Regedit, I edited the
entry to delete the leading space and the problem when away. Thanks
for your assistance, Kelly.

Hmm! Further checkpoints, Bob.

Go to Start/Run/control folders/View/Uncheck Restore previous folder windows
at logon.

Sorry! Meant to include the entry but forgot to. The entry was:

HKU\S-1-5-21-1868578056-......\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Name: SB Audigy 2 Startup Menu

Data: /L:ENG

Turns out there was a leading space before the "/" in the data entry.

Thanks, Bob. :o) Do me a favor and sent me the key via email? Preferably
from HKEY_CURRENT_USER, but that one will do.

Sorry, Kelly, I won't be able to send you the key immediately. The
problem was not on my computer, it was on my son-in-law's computer. I
won't be near that computer again until Friday. Also, the problem key
was not in HKCU, it was only in HKU.

Thanks, Bob. :o) Do me a favor and sent me the key via email? Preferably
from HKEY_CURRENT_USER, but that one will do.
