System wont go into standby mode

I got a Dell 2400 last August. Nobody told me about the problem of 3D screen
savers screwing up system standby. Dell sent me three restoration CDs to
make the computer exactly the way it was when I bought it. I haven't used a
3D screen saver since fixing this problem, but here it is again after about
3 weeks. No Standby Mode. Actually, I haven't been using any s/s. And I
already returned the CDs to avoid a $100.00 charge. Also, the patch that was
supposed to resolve this problem was already installed prior to the first
event. Something besides a 3D s/s is causing this problem for me.
Any ideas out there. Dell doesn't have a clue.
Thanks.

After I installed new modem drivers from the Windows
Update site I tried to go into standby and it said modem
was preventing system from going into standby. I rolled
back to old drivers but that did not solve the problem,
so it has become a bigger problem than I thought. I
haven't had time to work any further on it as yet. Do you
get an error message when you try and have you updated
drivers for modem? I also have a Dell system.

Preston,
Last July I was still using W-98. On day I decided to download a bunch of
non-critical patches, and when I restarted my computer, my hard drives were
wiped clean. Since then, and I have had this Dell for 3 months, I only
download "Critical" patches. In fact, after installing the last one a few
days ago, I could not access my bank account unless I Allowed Cookies, even
though they were saved in Tools>Privacy>Edit>Allow, so I used System Restore
to get rid of that patch. My problem had started prior to my downloading
anything since I did the restoration I mentioned, so I have no idea what is
causing the problem now. I can put the computer in standby using the
Start>Turn Off Computer, my problem is that it won't go into standby after
the set time in Power Schemes. I'll keep the "Eyeglasses on this post in
case you might have anything to add.
R.
