System will not allow logon

My computer was giving me problems... Whenever I tried to log on it
would say that it was loading my settings, show my desktop but then
immediately say "saving settings" and log me off and return to the
logon screen. It did this for my user account (it has administrator
privilege) as well as the Administrator account. I also tried bringing
the system up in Safe Mode but got the same result.

So, thinking I might be dealing with some corrupted files, I decided
that I would try to do a repair install hoping this would fix any
corrupted files.

Things started out well but when Setup got to "Installing Devices" it
got about halfway through (according to the green progress indicator)
indicating that there are 34 minutes remaining, then the screen goes
black with the cursor in the upper left-hand corner, it sits there with
the HDD light flashing occasionally for a while, and then it reboots.
When it finishes booting it shows "39 minutes remaining", proceeds to
"Installing Devices", get about halfway through (down to 34 minutes
remaining), screen goes black and the cycle starts all over again at
the 39 minute mark..

That got me wondering if I had a hardware problem, so I used True Image
to save an image of the HDD and then reformated the drive and did a
clean install of WinXP. Windows installed without any problems so the
hardware appears to be OK.

However, due to all the data and installed applications that were on
the computer when it started failing, I would like to repair the
original version of Windows.

Any ideas on how I might be able to get past the continual rebooting
problem?

TIA.

Knock, knock... Anybody home? ;-)

Bump.

Don't tell me this has never happened to anyone before?

YOu need patience. The folks in this newsgroup are all volunteers from
all over the world. They look at posts when they can. Impatience is
not well rewarded.

Did you recently remove spyware from the system? See if this link helps:

If that doesn’t help see this:

Thanks for the tips. Sorry if I appeared impatient... just wanted to
give the post a bump to keep it visible.

BTW, turns out the problem was caused by Ad-Aware. Thanks for the link
to the fix.
