I have been viewing the system volume information folder for some time but
now it states "System Volume Folder is Inaccessable Access is denied"

When I was able to access it the file name appeared slightly dim. Now it is
no longer dimmed.

Show system files is ticked and Hide protected system files is unticked.

I have tried resetting to default and again setting the proper options to no
avail.

Any help would be appreciated.

If using XP Professional, Right Click the folder, take Properties, click
Security (Tab). Add you Username to the ACL (Access Control List)
and afterwards grant yourself full control.

Thanks-

However, I am using XP home as a sole non networking user.

I am beginning to think that a program like Registry Mechanic may have
goofed up the registry and made the folder inacessable?

Ted-

There are some changes that occur with "System Volume Information"
after installing Service Pack 2. If it was Registry Mechanic, it's likely
the Registry cleanup/changes were archived in a backup. I don't use
the program, but most Registry Cleaners mark their backups based on
date done.

If using XP Home, reboot into Safe Mode, [F8, my
machine], then follow XP Professional instructions. (I
had to log on as Administrator.)[Seems I had made a
Restore Point with a program identified as a Virus on my
machine and I had to go in there to delete the copy of
the "virus".]

Hi Ted,

This is often the aftermath of spyware, etc. If this was the case, before
running virus cleaners, etc. turn off System Restore, then re-enable. Also,
at this point, clear all but the last one.

If this is not the case, see if anything here helps:

1. Insert the Windows XP CD
2. Click Start/Run and type:
"rundll32.exe advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection C:\Windows\Inf\sr.inf"

System Restore core files should be reinstalled.

Alternately, you may also open Windows Explorer, navigate to
"C:\Windows\Inf" folder and right-click sr.inf (choose Install)

And/or:

Restore/Enable System Restore (Line 278)

On an NTFS disk its permissions are tightly controlled. You need to log
on as Administrator (on booting to Safe Mode) and then right click on
it, Properties, Security, click Advanced and on the Ownership page set
the Owner to be your regular, Admin status, account
