system upgrading and activation

Will I encounter any problem (from Microsoft) if I replace the existing
motherboard, memory and cpu in my XP Pro machine?

What are the activation rules . . . what's allowable?

The system has been stable and essentially unchanged for a couple of years.
Changes in storage (ie; drive replacements) apparently don't trigger the
activation demons!

Thanks,

Joe

Simple answer:

Retail version of xp pro = yes.
(you can change hardware, reinstall, and / or, reactivate an unlimited
amount of times - you may have to call ms)

OEM(pre-installed)version of xp pro = no.
(oem cannot be transfered to a new computer and new mb and cpu = new
computer)

Just do it, you should be able to re-install it as many
times as you want. It will activate on-line every 120
days otherwise you have to use the automated activation.
After say two installs you'll talk to someone tell them
anything you want.

Greetings --

Normally, and assuming a retail license (many OEM licenses are not
transferable to a new motherboard), unless your motherboard is
virtually identical (same chipset, same IDE controllers, same BIOS
version, etc.) to the one on which the other WinXP installation was
originally performed, you'll need to perform a repair (a.k.a. in-place
upgrade) installation, at the very least:

As always when undertaking such a significant change, back up any
important data before starting.

This will probably also require re-activation. If it's been more
than 120 days since you last activated that specific Product Key,
you'll most likely be able to activate via the internet without
problem. If it's been less, you might have to make a 5 minute phone
call.

See www.aumha.org/win5/a/wpa.htm.

You will need to do at least a 'repair' reinstall. In that case the
system is likely to think 'this ain't Kansas any more' and insist on
your reactivating by phoning in to a toll free number to explain what
you did, briefly, and swap one long number for another. A few minutes,
and not that big a hassle if you are expecting it. If OTOH, you back
things up, format and do a clean install, then activate you will be
able to do it on the net like the first time, as more than 120 days have
passed.
