system unstable, can't roll back, can't run diskdoctor

Neither Scandisk nor Norton Diskdoctor don't run when "fix it" is checked.
My error message reads another process has access to some part of my drive
c. I don't know which process. Neither Windows xp or Norton can check for
bad sectors, etc. Any advice?

are you running scandisk from a boot disk?
if you run from bootdisk, there shouldn't be anything running !!!
