System Tray Icons Missing - only Logout/Login Fixes - ATTN Windows XP Support Team

R

Rob Barbour

The System
------------
OS: WindowsXP SP2
Mem: 1 GIG
CPU: P4-3 GHZ

The Issue
----------
Systray icons are missing after logging in

Only Resolution To Date
-------------------------
log out and then log in

Key points
-----------
- auto login is NOT enabled
- hide inactive icons is NOT enabled

What I've Done To Date
-------------------------
1. Searched Google Groups (http://groups.google.com) (hundreds of others
have this
issue)
2. Tried the tips on Kelly's site
(http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_n.htm#na)
3. Created a new profile (per Microsoft support)
4. Tried hiding inactive icons, apply, and then unhiding all icons
5. Tried refreshing the System Tray via VB and API calls
6. Tried many registry changes from suggestions on Google
7. Waited 10 minutes after reaching the "Welcome" screen before attempting
to log in
8. Logged in immediately after reaching the "Welcome" screen

The shear fact that so many people have this issue with WindowsXP leads me
to believe that this is an issue that Microsoft needs to address ASAP. I'm
now at a point where logging in/out/in gets tiresome and I'd like a
solution.

I'm now begging and pleading for an actual solution, hotfix, or someone
admitting this is an issue :)

Thanks,

Rob

Q. "The shear fact that so many people have this issue with WindowsXP".

A. No, it is not a fact at all as most folks are not having this issue.
You managed to cause self-inflicted damage to your system.

Carey,

Yes it IS A FACT that quite a few people have this problem (I never said
"ALL").
Since you're an MVP, you should've searched Google Groups before replying.

And I forgot to mention it in the original post, but I already did a Repair
Install.

Does anyone have any ideas?
(please search http://groups.google.com to see the number of people that
have this problem)

I have also this problem on 2 systems with Win XP Pro+SP2.

My temporary solution is calling task mgr (CTRL+ALT+DEL) stopping the
explorer.exe process and resrting it immediately;
by this way you more icons in the notification area (systray) ...
It's not glorious and I'ld like to get a solution or at least to know what
I'm doing wrong ...

That's a new page that I haven't seen before and all but one of the tips on
that page have been tried.

I'm going to attempt emptying the Prefetch directory to see the results...

I thought I was going crazy trying to figure this out. I didn't this problem
untill SP2 was installed. So far using a manual logon works. It's a pain
however and I would like to see Microsft fix this.

Hi David,

None of this works???

Icons are missing or disappear, reappear: This happens for most Auto-Logon
users.

Methods/workarounds: Log off and Log back on, password protect your account
or disable SSDP and uPNP Services.

Hi Carey,

I realize this is an older post, however I just wanted to say that you
are absolutely incorrect with the below statement. I have yet to see an XP
installation where this does NOT happen. I've never worried much about it
before, and today I decided to see if I can find a fix. I'm shocked to learn
that MS has not acknowledged this issue. Usually I can find a fix for most
problems or at least a page that declares it a "known problem" with some
possible workarounds. This is the first one I have run into that there is
nothing officially posted for the problem. This has been an issue from the
time XP was released as far as I can recall.

I have 5 computers myself. I have built hundreds since Windows XP was
introduced. I have seen this exactly twice. Both times the owner had been

I too have build hundreds of WinXP systems without this issue. I have also
seen many with this issue. The problem doesn't usually occur because the
users 'mess around in the registry'. It usually occurs after a period of
time -- 6-12 months or so combined with periodically installing and
uninstalling 3rd party software. Third party software is frequently riddled
with install/uninstall errors, especially with the registry.

Hi,

Same on the numbers but not on the length of time. This hasn't anything to
do with it. "Certain" program icons do not have the capability of
rebuilding. That is on the programmer. I had kept a list of the few that
were noted, would have to dig to find them, one was SETI. But this only
happened after one would clear Past Items. And/or respectively speaking
after the Net Framework update, which has since been corrected within the
next update for the same.
