msconfig

when i click the items i don't want to start it chngaes the startup to a
selecetive start, not a normal startup...when i change that setting back to a
normal startup it configures those programs to start up again.

any ideas ?

Yes. You're "selecting" what apps you'd like to autostart, right?
Uncheck what you don't want, and reboot.
No big deal.

Your point? That is exactly what it should do.

A lot of it depends on the programs that are starting - most are
probably in the Run key in the registry -
The first thing I look for is a tools/options/preferences menu within
the program itself that tells it not to run on startup. Apps like Real
Player and Quicktime both have those options, a lot of times it's so
they can monitor for updates.
If the program doesn't offer an option to disable starting when
Windows starts, msconfig should be able to tell you where it's being
called - as I said it's either in the registry or in your startup
folder. Deleting it from either of those locations will also stop it
from starting, and will be somewhat "cleaner" and more appropriate than
using msconfig to perform a selective startup, particularly if you know
you'll never want those programs to start automatically.

don't change it back to normal startup.

--Uninstall the apps that put these items in place

--Reconfigure the apps to prevent the items from loading

--delete them manually from the Startup Folder or the Run key in the
registry

That's the way it's supposed to work. Leave it on selective start up.
When the system reboots and gives you the message from msconfig that
it's in selective startup just check the box to not have it display that
message again.

Here is some general info on controlling startup apps:

First step should be to check in the options for the program you don't
want to start and see if there is a setting to tell it not to run at
startup. The next step is to remove any entries you don't want from the
two startup folders:

C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

For anything else uncheck their entries in the startup tab of msconfig:
Start | Run | Msconfig | Ok

Another option is to remove the reference to them from one of these keys
in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

Make sure you have a backup of the registry using a program like ERUNT
before making any changes to the registry.

In most cases, with "well-mannered" applications, it's usually as
simple as opening the undesired program and deselecting the option to
"display icon in the system tray" or to "start when Windows starts."

Additionally, Look in the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start
Menu\Programs\Start Up and C:\Documents and Settings\username\Start
Menu\Programs\Start Up folders, and in the system registry, primarily in
the HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and
HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run keys.
