system temp sensor?

(A) Is there any consistency in where various motherboards have their
"system" or "case" temperature probe ... the one read by the mobo maker's
software ... or by programs like Mother Board Monitor or SpeedFan ?

(B) Is this a reading of the chipset (not the CPU) temperature ever given as
"system" or "case" temperature by these temperature monitoring programs ?

Thanks,

A) No. For a great many though, the CPU one is something as simple as a
thermistor under the CPU socket.
B) Yes although you usually have to specify which IC is the case and
CPU. This isn't that complicated to do as the CPU temp will always be
higher than the case unless you're using liquid nitrogen.
