System sounds barely audible

Logging on to my laptop today, I noticed that one of my system sounds (the
"click" noise when I click on buttons/links in IE) had gone missing. I
managed to find the right options in Control Panel to restore it, but
although it is now playing it is so quiet that it is barely audible. I have
adjusted all the volume controls I can find to max, but I can still scarcely
hear it. However, some other system sounds seem to be playing at a normal
volume level, and I am able to hear streaming audio from websites OK. I
thought a system restore might set my sounds back to how they had been
yesterday, but attempts to restore to my last two restore points failed.

Please can anyone explain why my sounds have gone so quiet, and what I can
do to get them back to an audible level?

Thanks in advance.

Open Windows Media Player>View>Enhancements
Click Cross Fading and Auto Volume Leveling
Check the bottom lefthand corner and see if the
Volume leveling it turned ON, if not click to change.

thanks for the suggestion, but unfortunately this doesn't seem to have made
any difference.

Try adjusting the "manual" volume control button/knob on your laptop.
(check manual for location if not obvious)

The problem is now fixed - I think it must have been to do with Microsoft's
own updates as I noticed the loss of sound the same day that I had installed
updates, and a similar loss of sound occurred on my boyfriend's laptop around
the same time. I have just installed Microsoft's latest updates and
everything has gone back to normal. Thanks again to those who offered
suggestions.
