No sound from Windows Media player

Hi

I hope somebody can help me because I am going off my nut. From last night
Media Player stopped producing any sound. Well, it does produce a slight
sound but you can only hear it when the volume is turned all the way up, and
even then it is barely audible. All the other programs on my computer make
sound, I can still play cds with Real player and Napster, and all the other
system noises the pc makes are still fine. I was using version 10, but tried
upgrading to 11 but it made no difference. Please, what the hell is wrong
with my pc?????

thanks in advance for your help

Did you try a system restore to before the problem started? If that doesn't
work I don't have anything else to suggest other than look in Event Viewer
in the various logs for any error messages, and post to the windows media
player newsgroup since this seems to be related only to WMP.

A common cause I have noticed with my experience (and one cause I
haven't seen mentioned anywhere strangely), is that sound from windows
media player and some other media players (I have had this happen to me
with both windows media player and realplayer) will not play back at
all if you have reinstalled windows (I know this is a fact with windows
98 and I think windows 98 second edition plus possibly windows 2000
professional) and have been using a version of directx that is newer
than what your operating system came with. The solution is to reinstall
your newest applicable version of directx. I hope this helps as I sure
could have been helped had I had known this before I pulled all of my
hair (figure of speech) out. Good luck all and later!
