I have a staff member with a problem on their computer and
our IT person is on holiday:

The computer in question loads up after user id and
password have been entered but then we get the following
message indicating shutdown within 60 seconds:

"NTauthority/system C/windows/system32\lsass.exe
terminated w/system status code 1073741819

Does anybody know what I can do to fix this problem as we
have 60 seconds which allows us no time for anything.

Thanks for whatever you can provide

John

Your client is infected with a variant of the SASSER worm.

Had your client used a firewall, installed an antivirus scanner and kept it
updated, and installed all critical updates from Windows Update, they would
have not been infected. The Windows patch that prevents infection has been
posted on Windows Update for months.

Perhaps a little computer security education is in order, both for you and
your client. The Blaster and Sasser worms were two of the most publicized
worms in history, and even the Windows Update site references the Sasser
worm and it's actions. Apparently both of you have somehow remained unaware
of that.

"If your computer is constantly attempting to shutdown
or reboot, quickly go to:

Start > Run and type: CMD , and hit enter.
This opens the Command Prompt window.

Then type: shutdown -a , and hit enter.

This should halt the rebooting problem."

Sounds very much like the Sasser worm. Run a complete
scan with anti-virus software. Also, run updated anti-
spyware software.
