System Restore

R

Rick Urquhart

OK, I have been following 2 problems I put here over the last two days.
Just now I tried to access system restore. I know I have used it before.
But the wizard does not start now. When I go to control panel, system,
there is no 7th tab called system restore. What has happened? I want to
get back there so I can restore to a point that I know was working about 2
weeks ago.

Hi Bert,
Nothing worked. There was no System Restore tab under System in Control
Panel.

Bert, OK I tried this and I think I am a little further ahead. When in
Admin mode I try start, all programs, accessories, system tools, system
restore, I get:
"System Restore has been turned off by group policy. To turn on System
Restore, contact your domain Administrator."
I do not remember if this was the case before or not; I just have a home
computer where I connect to my ISP provider over ADSL to get internet
service. This still seems to be working. But I do remember restoring an
old restore point in the past.

Under System, Computer name: user-p6tunujj60
Workgroup: WORKGROUP
Under Network ID, connecting to the network:
This computer is part of a business network, and I use it to connect to
other computers at work.
[not] This computer is for home use and is not part of a business network.
When I try to change this, I get no error but the change does not stay.
So I am not sure if a virus or something has changed these items or not.
Incidentally I do have Avast the free virus scanner running and I have not
yet turned it off in these tests to see what will happen.
I tried to make a boot disk and tested it and something went wrong. My
computer now does not power down automatically when windows closes. I now
get a screen telling me to do just that manually.
So I have a lot of issues. I am close to re-loading my system. But this
will be a lot of work since my kids will loose all their settings.
Bert, do you have any other ideas?
Rick
PS: I do not even see this listing from Outlook Express by date. I have to
search for the topic "System Restore" to get here???

Hi Rick,

Did you try these solutions?
Can't Access System Restore - Disabled by Group Policy - or System Restore
tab missing:

The turned off by group policy message is often caused by virus or malware
infection along with some of the other problem you describe.

I would suggest getting help in cleaning the system.

Bert,
I have good news.
From Safe mode running in network, with no Avast virus scanner, I started
with your suggestions again. The difference is that when I ran
%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe
and it gave the same message that system restore had been turned off by my
domain administrator. Before I got no message at all.
So I then ran regedit and went to SystemRestore; before there was no key to
delete. Now one of the two, DisableSR was there. I deleted it and
rebooted.
Again from Safe mode running in network, with no Avast virus scanner, I went
into System Restore from the program menu. The difference was that the
message box said I had to go from safe to normal more to start system
restore. I did that and have system resore running now, with 7 tabs on the
System box instead of 6 as I had had before. So I think I am most of the
way there now. I will try the suggestions with hijack later if I cannot get
to the end. I do not think I had a virus. I have Win98SE on my c: drive
and Windows XP Professional on my e: drive. I made a boot disk for a friend
for Windows XP directed at his c: drive and forgot the difference and tested
the boot disk on my machine. I think I zapped my system and this was the
problem. Avast virus scanner would not let me do much with my system after
that.

So now the last thing I want to fix is the problem that now when shutting
down Windows XP, it now goes to a screen that says I can manually turn off
the power switch. Before it always turned off the power automatically. I
did not have to do anything. Is this a simple configuration problem or
refresh of a driver on my system?

Bert, OK, I am back. I had a conversation there about my non-parasite
issues and got nowhere. That is not the place anyway. I specifically asked
if I was parasite free from my log and the answer was yes.
So back to you. I have had time to think about some other issues relative
to my system.
1. I have uninstalled Nero8 and put Nero7 back. The original problem of not
being able to use my memory stick in non-admin mode has gone away. Things
are good as before. I think this really is a Nero problem but I have to
make sure it is not my system. My free support from Nero runs out at the
end of the month even though they have not responded to my last 2 e-mails.
I am going to phone Monday.
2. The problem with manually shutting down my system when Windows closes and
(instead of automatically shutting down my machine) telling me via the
screen that I can hit the power button, is still there. I would like to
resolve that issue. I am not sure what it is. It seemed to happen when I
tested a boot disk on my machine.

But I think it might be a hardware, flash board memory problem. Let me
explain. I have had this system board since XP was born. But I installed
it with Win98SE. The drivers are all non-XP except for the audio drivers.
I had Win98SE running and then bought Win XP Pro. I bought a new HD and
created c: and e: partitions. I installed Win98SE on c: and Win XP Pro on
e:. At the time I needed Win98SE to run kids games and old Borland
software. I do not need to do this anymore. I started Windows from a boot
loader. After a period of time Win98SE would not boot anymore and I tried
to fix it from the windows 98 forum but got nowhere. I did not have to fix
it anyway and have continued to use Win XP Pro. Win I booted into Win98SE I
got into safe mode, tried to load Windows and the machine would then power
down on its own with no warning (I will refer to this below in my discussion
of my problem).
Now I have the problem in Win XP Pro of not powering down automatically. I
got into the Win98SE menu by accident this week and instead of killing the
power without warning as it did before, it came up with a screen "telling me
I could turn off my computer", the same situation as Win XP Pro. Could it
be that I have a non-windows software problem?
So how can I refresh the drivers on the board. They were loaded the first
day of creation and I have been scared to do anything since. Besides I am
not sure if Windows XP loads it's own drivers in. Your advice on how to
approach this would be appreciated. The reason that this came up is that my
IT guy at work (I am an electrical engineer) told me shutting down windows
and my computer had something to do with the ACPI processor (power handler).
Just a clue to where I might have to go.
All these problems might be hardware related. I would appreciate your
advice.
Thanks,
Rick

I would strongly recommend doing the HiJackThis log before dealing with

Bert,
I have good news.
From Safe mode running in network, with no Avast virus scanner, I
started with your suggestions again. The difference is that when I ran
%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe
and it gave the same message that system restore had been turned off by
my domain administrator. Before I got no message at all.
So I then ran regedit and went to SystemRestore; before there was no
key to delete. Now one of the two, DisableSR was there. I deleted it
and rebooted.
Again from Safe mode running in network, with no Avast virus scanner, I
went into System Restore from the program menu. The difference was
that the message box said I had to go from safe to normal more to start
system restore. I did that and have system resore running now, with 7
tabs on the System box instead of 6 as I had had before. So I think I
am most of the way there now. I will try the suggestions with hijack
later if I cannot get to the end. I do not think I had a virus. I
have Win98SE on my c: drive and Windows XP Professional on my e: drive.
I made a boot disk for a friend for Windows XP directed at his c: drive
and forgot the difference and tested the boot disk on my machine. I
think I zapped my system and this was the problem. Avast virus scanner
would not let me do much with my system after that.

So now the last thing I want to fix is the problem that now when
shutting down Windows XP, it now goes to a screen that says I can
manually turn off the power switch. Before it always turned off the
power automatically. I did not have to do anything. Is this a simple
configuration problem or refresh of a driver on my system?
Rick
Hi Rick,

Did you try these solutions?
Can't Access System Restore - Disabled by Group Policy - or System
Restore tab missing:
http://bertk.mvps.org/html/error.html#1

The turned off by group policy message is often caused by virus or
malware infection along with some of the other problem you describe.

I would suggest getting help in cleaning the system.

Read this Announcement and follow it's instructions.

Bert, OK I tried this and I think I am a little further ahead. When
in Admin mode I try start, all programs, accessories, system tools,
system restore, I get:
"System Restore has been turned off by group policy. To turn on
System Restore, contact your domain Administrator."
I do not remember if this was the case before or not; I just have a
home computer where I connect to my ISP provider over ADSL to get
internet service. This still seems to be working. But I do remember
restoring an old restore point in the past.

Under System, Computer name: user-p6tunujj60
Workgroup: WORKGROUP
Under Network ID, connecting to the network:
This computer is part of a business network, and I use it to connect
to other computers at work.
[not] This computer is for home use and is not part of a business
network.
When I try to change this, I get no error but the change does not
stay.
So I am not sure if a virus or something has changed these items or
not. Incidentally I do have Avast the free virus scanner running and
I have not yet turned it off in these tests to see what will happen.
I tried to make a boot disk and tested it and something went wrong.
My computer now does not power down automatically when windows
closes. I now get a screen telling me to do just that manually.
So I have a lot of issues. I am close to re-loading my system. But
this will be a lot of work since my kids will loose all their
settings.
Bert, do you have any other ideas?
Rick
PS: I do not even see this listing from Outlook Express by date. I
have to search for the topic "System Restore" to get here???

Hi Rick,

Give these instructions a try.
Can't Access System Restore - Disabled by Group Policy - or System
Restore tab missing:

If no luck there, the next step would be to reinstall System
Restore.

Hi Rick,

Or type or paste the following command in the Start - Run box then
press Enter.

%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

If this does not work, try running System Restore from Safe Mode.

Hi Rick,

The shutdown issue is most likely a power down problem. Take a look at these
troubleshooting steps.
