System restore

I have several restore points in the system volume folder,
but when I go to the system restore, it says there are no
restore points. When I try to create a restore point, it
says not available, turn off the comuter and restart. I do
that and the same result appears. Any help would be
appreciated. The manufacturer says to do a full restore but
with a lot of stuff on the hard drive, I am looking for a
better way. I do have computer knowledge.

No Willit, I sent them email twice and asked was there any way to tweak the registry or files to make the system see the restore files and they stated I had to put the system back to the ask shipped condition. I feel sure there has to be a way to make it work. I have other copies of xp home that I could use to extract and also a laptop with xp on it that I could copy part of the registry, but I don't know what part to export to make it function.

You may have the restore point data in the folder - but have lost the
log files describing them and they are now inaccessible. I suspect
that this reset may be done by certain windows updates that are 'cannot
be uninstal;l;ed' and they kill restore points that might be used as a
means of doing so.

In such circumstances you need to accept that these points are gone, and
clean it out to start over. At System - System restore, check 'Disable'
and OK, to reboot without it. Then clean out the System Volume
Information folder on each drive (you will need to have Folder Options -
View set to show Hidden files, and *not* Hide Protected mode ones)

Then start it up again,
I think one cause of trouble with it is its being allowed 12% of the
drive by default - on a modern large drive that is really too much. So
take settings of each drive and reduce the space - I reckon on about
500MB being enough for say two weeks worth of points, which is about as
far back as is sensible to use it. Indeed on a purely data drive there
is no point having it enabled at all

It is an unfortunate habit of tech support at many makers to cure the
cut finger by amputating the arm. Sure they then have it back in
working state - but you have also lost *every* bit of installed third
party software and your data.
