system restore

Hi All,

After downloading all of the patches after the MSBlaster scare, I can no
longer restore from a restore point. It just hangs there. When I shut down
it tells me that I need to restore from another restore point. Other than
that, the system runs great!

This is WinXP pro, Sony Vaio Laptop 80 gig hard drive, p4 processor, 512MB
Ram Any help would be appreciated!

Restore is not reliable. It's a marketing gimmick for MS.
You can turn it off from Control Panel > System > and then
re-boot and it will purge it's file. Then re-boot, turn it
back on.
You still have to deal the problem, it's a crap program,
that half works, half the time.

Do a real backup and get Erunt for your registry. It puts
a folder on your root dir with a installer.

System Restore In MS's own words .......lol

"The System Restore feature of Windows XP enables you to
restore a PC, in the event of a problem, to a previous
state without losing personal data files. System Restore
actively monitors system file changes to record or store
previous versions before the changes occurred. With System
Restore, you never have to think about taking system
snapshots as it automatically creates easily identifiable
restore points, which allow you to restore the system to a
previous point in time."

"you never have to think about taking system snapshots"
Oh, really.

Thanks for the info. I have used sys restore numerous times. Why it's
failing now I'm not sure. It has gotten me out of some sticky situations in
the past. I'll give that a try.

Note that Willit has an obsession that SR is useless and a scam. It can
be a very useful tool, though it is no substitute for a full backup now
and again - they are complementary matters. But this one is a known
minor problem - see http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;313853

You need to disable System Restore, reboot to clear it out and
re-enable it to regain Restore functionality.

See Properties of My Computer to do this.
