System Restore

For some reason, my system restore is not creating new restore points and
has lost all the previous restore points. What can I do to fix this?

Also... Is there any other program that I can download that does the same
thing as Windows system restore.

Thank you.

Usually your issue means that the Services to support restore are
disabled, if the the restore function is still checked. Services
include System Restore and Task Scheduler.

If Port 135 (DCOM) is completely disabled, then Restore will also fail
to function properly.

Doug Knox has a vbs file that will allow a manual restore point if the
Services are not properly enabled. Do a site search at
http://www.dougknox.com/. Take a look at this part of his site for
some really great guidance.

I use an external hard drive with Image software (Acronis) to create a
HD image, which IMO is the best level of a system "restore".

Good luck.

You probably need to turn off System Restore completely, then reboot
the computer and turn it back on again.

See MVP Bert Kinney's System Restore pages:

There is no program that will duplicate the detailed tracking of
System File changes that System Restore provides. Disk Imaging
programs will provide the same ability to recover, provided you make
new disk image backups at frequent intervals, and Norton GoBack
purports to do much the same thing as System Restore. However I would
not inflict Norton products on anyone except perhaps my worst enemies,
and even for them Norton may be too severe a punishment.

Good luck

Hi,

There are several reasons this may occur. Let's take a look at Event
Viewer for any System Restore logs that may have been created recently
that may help us diagnosing the problem.

Go to Start - Run and type eventvwr.msc and press enter.
Click on System in the left pane.
Click the gray title “Source” at the top of the source name column in
the right pane to sort by source name, look for "sr" and "srservice".
Double click on each of these events, then click on the button below the
two arrows in the upper right corner. This will copy the event
information to the clipboard. Paste the information for each of the two
event here. There’s no need to post duplicate Event ID’s.

How do I use the Event Viewer to search for System Restore logs?
