System Restore

I made a restoration back to my earliest restoration point
(only 3 months back) and wanted to undo this to return
to 'now'. Every book I've read said this is possible
without reservation.
However I just get the message,Undo Incomplete'.
So I am stuck at the beginning of my computer use losing
programs such as Ad-Aware etc although my anti virus and
firewall seem to remain.
Can anyone enlighten me on this conumdrum please?

Hi

3 months is really too far to back and use a System Restore checkpoint -
they are deleted after 90 days in any case. Your problem could be with the
Registry. Have you got any other checkpoints to use?

Mr Denny -Thanks for your reply. The 90 day max. rule I
have never seen in any info on system restore. I hope
it's not true.
As for other restore points, which I have, I cannot
restore anywhere as I am at the beginning. I can only
UNDO which does not work.
I wish I had accessed forums to realise there are many
problems associated with S. restore.
What about going back to 'factory settings' or is that
putting a gun to my haed and pulling the trigger?

The 90 day rule is a fact. Attempting to restore to a point later than 90
days could destabilize your computer. Even 90 days is too long ago, unless
you've been on vacation for 80 days.

Perhaps you are confusing System Restore with backing up?
