System Restore Won't Work

I've tried repeatedly to roll back my system, even trying different restore
points. Each time, after rebooting and logging on, I get a long delay and
then a message that "System Restore Could Not Restore" my system to an
earlier restore point."
Any idea what's wrong and how to fix it?

Hi

System Restore may have some corrupted files in it. The following will
delete all existing SR checkpoints and leave you with one new checkpoint:

Right click My Computer, select Properties and then the System Restore tab.
Enable 'Turn off System Restore on all drives' - Apply>OK and then reboot
your system. After that first reboot go back into System Restore, disable
'Turn off System Restore on all drives' - Apply>OK and then reboot again.
After this second reboot a new checkpoint will have been created.

Hi,
Do you have a single or multiple partitions?
Check that there is sufficient disk space availaible on SR monitored
partitions.
Turn System Restore off, reboot and turn it back on. This will delete
all restore points up to this point.Open Control Panel, open System, go
to the System Restore tab, place a check next to "Turn Off System
Restore on all drives," click apply and ok and reboot, then turn it back on.

Normally what has happened there is that the restore
point when it was set up either has not been accepted or
has been corrupted. I have experienced that before and
because I was having trouble with this persons computer
and could not rectify it. I ensured I had hard copies of
all files required for that person and then re-installed
his windows xp. I have another computer which I am
working on at the moment which wont even get to the
restore settings area to do system restore. This hard
drive has 20 gig of business files to backup so I would
personally would not like to re-instore windows on this
if possible. That is why I did the post earlier to avoid
that if possible. With yours though if you dont have
heaps to back up re-install as it will work otherwise we
will have to wait for other advice.
Cheers from Australia

If you have original XP CD then you may try:-
Insert the Windows XP CD
Start > Run > Type the following command and press Enter
"rundll32.exe advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection C:\Windows\Inf\sr.inf" >ok

May I ask what all of this would be doing to my computer?
BTW, this is a VERY recent fresh install of Windows.
