System Restore to a point 6 months ago

How can I restore to a date 6 months ago? The System Restore utility in XP only gives me restore points for last month?
I am trying to fix my daughter's laptop which keeps crashing and I suspect this could have been caused by software she installed last summer (before she went off to college!).

System Restore points are retained for only 90 days. Each day the oldest
restore point is deleted and a new one created.
