System restore points all gone.

I have had 2 instances where the System Restore points
have dissappeared for no apparent reason. I lost all
restore points and had to start over. Any ideas?
 
Hi Alan,

Did you run Disk Cleanup (cleanmgr.exe)? There is a setting there that will
remove old restore points.

Hi Alan,

You have plenty of space allocated for each drive on which SR is running?
You haven't stopped the service for whatever reason?

When does this happen to you? Is it seemingly random, or does it follow a
specific event?

Everyone should have a secondary backup. Frequently recommended here
is erunt.zip, a 575K freeware utility.

(Doesn't answer your question as stated, but it did save me once when
Restore failed.)

I have a suspicion that this can arise if *too much* space is allotted
to the restore points. It certainly can if the log files and stored
state get out of sync. System Restore. Check 'Disable System Restore,
and OK, reboot. Now have Folder Options - View set to show Hidden
files, and *not* Hide Protected mode ones and delete everything in the
System Volume Information folder on each drive

Start SR up again, and I review the settings for each drive. There is
not much point having it enabled on data drives, and on ones with System
or Programs I would reduce the space allotted if more than say 1GB - the
default of 12% of a drive seems too much for its own good on modern
large drives
