System Restore on Windows XP Pro SP2

I have noticed that my manually and automatically created restore points are
being deleted leaving me with no restore points on reboot. I have no problems
manually creating or using scripting to create restore points and the system
seems to create automatic restore points, it is just that nothing is
available after a reboot.
I have plenty of hard disk space and both system restore and task scheduler
are enabled.
I read somewhere that RealPlayer may be the culprit so I upgraded to the
latest version 10.5 (as suggested) but still have the same problem.
Last time I had problems with system restore, I got details on reinstalling
the system restore application. Can someone give me directions on this?

Here is MVP Bert Kinney's page on System Restore:

You will find what you need there.

As a follow up, this is one of the specific messages I get
The System Restore filter encountered the unexpected error '0xC0000008'
while processing the file 'rundll32.exe.new' on the volume 'HarddiskVolume1'.
It has stopped monitoring the volume.

Thanks Malke,
I have gone through all the items on Bert Kinney's page.
Although it is most helpfull it doesn't really lead me to a solution.
I can see a lot of "sc" errors on my PC as generically
Event-ID: 1
Source: SR
Symbolicname: EVMSG_DISABLED VOLUME
Description: "The systemrestore filter encountered the unexpected error
0xc000000d while processing the file file_name on the Volume volume_name. It
has stopped monitoring the volume."

Microsoft talks about paid support. I don't think I should pay to fix
something that I bought from them in the first place. It is abviously a known
problem and they have a hotfix.
I may have to wait until they roll it up in a service pack.

As you have found some System Restore (SR) problems simply defy the current
wisdom in finding a solution. I have a problem with SR that has persisted
for about 12 months but I gave up on it long ago as even if a solution to
the problem is found System Restore is unreliable and perhaps dangerous.
Dangerous to the extent that you believe that SR is providing a viable
backup of the Registry until you need to use it and only then do you find
you have a problem. Now what to do?

I suggest you stop mourning SR and use the excellent ERUNT. As you may know
ERUNT does most what SR does but has the significant advantage that each
Restore point is standalone and not dependent on the preceding Restore point
as does SR.

Thanks Edward,
I didn't know anything about ERUNT. I have tried it and it seems to work
well. At least I now have restore points that don't disappear everytime I
reboot.
Once again thanks

Thanks Rock. I mistakenly thought it was part of the operating system and
not a third party piece of software. Having now found it, it looks ideal.

Great, glad you found it. Yes it works well.
