system restore not restoring

my system restore will create points each day but come the next day they
have disappeared. where have they gone and how can i keep them?

There must be a new crop of XP newbies on the net this
last week as the dreaded "restore" issue has once again
reared it's ugly head. System restore is a piece of crap
programming that is best turned off to save you the
agrivation of missing or non functioning restore points.
Restore points are altered or cleared off by anything from
disk defragmenting to virus scanning. Instead use NT
Backup which is so very reliable and will always be there
when you need it. If you have XP HE then it isn't
installed by default although God only knows why. Put your
disk in the drive and then when the autoplay brings up the
options screen choose "perform additional tasks" and then
choose "explore this disk" or something like that and then
look for the valueadd\msft\ntbackup folder and install it.
You will now have a good and reliable backup utility in
your start\all programs\accessories\system tools\NT
Backup. Have fun.

You can turn it off from Control Panel > System > and then
re-boot and it will purge it's file. Then re-boot, turn it
back on.

And try this if the above does not work.

1. Put the in the Windows XP CD
2. Click Start , Run
3. Type the following then OK

rundll32.exe advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection
C:\Windows\Inf\sr.inf
or
You can also open Windows Explorer, go to
C:\Windows\Inf folder and right-click sr.inf (Then Install)

"without losing personal data files". What does SR have
to do with personal data files ??
