2nd reply - I see that in windows/I386 there is sr.sy_ All the other files
also end with '_' I see there are also some zip files - one large one ending
with .cab

Hi,

Slipstreaming intergrates a service pack, SP2 for Windows XP in this
case with the original copy of XP. This creates an install disk with the
most up to date files available. It can be used to install, or reinstall
Windows, or in this case, a source of files to reinstall System Restore.

What am I meant to do with AutoStreamer - sorry if it should be obvious. I
find that I do have sr.sy_ on windows/I386 -and a lot of other files ending
in '_' Is this any help?

What do I want to use the AutoStreamer for/ I don't understand what it means
to slipstream. Also this is third time I've answered but previous 2 items
have not appeared on this thread although your web screen says the message
has been submitted. One thing I mentioned was that I found sr.sy_ and a lot
of other files ending with '_' on windows.I386. is this ok?

Slipstreaming is the process by which a new installation CD is created
with the lastet Service Pack integrated into it.

The files from your original install CD (original release or service
pack 1) for Windows XP and those from Service Pack 2 install (download
or CD) are used to create a new CD image file (.ISO file) on your hard
drive. You then use a CD Burning program to write this ISO file to a
CD, thereby creating a new installation CD with Service Pack 2
integrated into it.

Another program for this purpose is nlite (free) from
http://www.nliteos.com/

Good luck

I've downloaded nlite and the first thing it asks is to be directed to
windows installation source. Presumably that means the windows cds. My
system was preinstalled so I don't have any installation discs. What do I do
now?

autostream wants me to have installation discs which i don't as system was
preinstalled according to the Microsoft system where the punter is only
supplied with a rescue disc. What do I do now?

Yuck. OEM preinstalls strike again.

Your best recourse would be to contact the OEM that sold you the
computer and request an XP Installation CD. Odds are that they will
either tell you that it is not available or want a fairly substantial
price for providing it, but it is worth a try.

There some instructions available that might repeat might work, but no
guarantee.

Go to http://bink.nu/forums/11381/ShowPost.aspx and scroll down the
conversation until you find the lengthy item posted by "replicant".
That might work.

Good luck

firm that supplied computer and reinstalled has gone bust. What does
Microsoft MVP mean under your name? Is Microsoft interested in its customers
or not? Surely there must be some way of obtaining this elusive file. What
about the sr.sy_ which is already on my computer. What is it (and a lot of
other files without the last letter) doing there?

Hi,
firm that supplied computer and reinstalled has gone bust.

That's unfortunate but all to common.
What does Microsoft MVP mean under your name?

You can find information concerning the MS MVP program here.

Is Microsoft interested in its customers or not?
Yes!

Surely there must be some way of obtaining this
elusive file. What about the sr.sy_ which is already on my computer.

Sr.sy_ is one of the files needed to reinstall System Restore.
Make note of the location of this file and run the SR install again.
When asked for the location of the files, point it there.

By the way, where was this file located?
What is it (and a lot of other files without the last letter) doing
there?

These are compressed files, the same as you would find on the Windows
CD.

Most OEM systems do not ship with a CD anymore to save a buck. Instead,
they put the files on the hard drive in a recovery partition. I my
option, this is very wrong!

I attempted to install sr.inf again and directed request for sr.sys to
windows/I386 where sr.sy_ was located.
I then got the dialog headed “confirm file replace†which said “the target
file exists and is newer than the source. Overwrite the new file†to which I
answered “yesâ€. There was then a succession of requests for replacements to
all of which I answered “yes†They were scclient.dll, srsvc.dll, srrstr.dll
and rstui.exe.
Upon restart I got a dialog headed “rundll32.exe unable to locate componentâ€
with the explanation “this application has failed to start because
framedyn.dll was not found. Reinstalling the application may fix this
problem. There was an additional box headed “rundll†which said “Error
loading scclient.dll. The specified module could not be found.

Now what – and what problems new problems will I suffer on account of no
rundll.exe running?

Now we are in worse trouble. The sound has gone. Found New Hardware wizard
appears. Hardware not installed because wizard cannot find necessary
software. Hardware device is ATI Mobility Radeon 9600/9700 and is said to be
working properly. Troubleshooting says there are no active mixer devices
available. So now not only we cannot make a restore point but we have not
sound - and possibly other problems via the missing rundll.exe (ATI do not
provide any support for laptops)

Hi,

Normally at this point I would suggest performing a repair install. The
problem is a repair install can not be done without a Windows CD. I
would suggest calling Microsoft at 800-426-9400 and explain that the OEM
builder went out of business and you are in need of a Windows disk.

Bert, this seems to run for ever but thanks for all your help. I am in
England - is there a local number I can call for microsoft? Do I quote your
name and your MVP status?

I don'dt suppose you want to go any further with me but just in case can I
tell you what else I have found?

Under other devices - under large yellow question mark multimedia audio
controller right click, properties say, "device is not configured correctly
(code 1)
to reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall driver"
The Update wizard shows but cannot install.
The properties say nothing is known about driver.

Under control panel, component services, computers, my computer
error shown here saying, 'make sure MS-DTC is running but seeking to start
it received reply, 'unable to start the MSDTC service on the target computer.
Error code was "8007041D"
Under dcom config there is a file 'blocked drivers' properties of which say,
'local path rundll32.3exe. C:\windows\system32\hotplug'

When windows boots there is a box start up rundll 'error loading
srclient.dll the specified module could not be found' The missing file is
sitting in Windows/System32. Should it be somewhere else - where is rundll
looking?
