Help please,
I created a restore point before installing a programme. I checked that the
point was created and it was there.
I installed the programme, then wanted to restore to the previous state as I
wanted to remove all traces.
My restore point had gone, as had all of the points previously created
automatically and they were replaced by a system checkpoint, post
installation.

Is there any way I can get my computer back into the state it was before my
installation? This is the second time it has happened to me. It's happened
on XP Home and XP Pro and I've no idea how to get back to my initial state.

PS it is not hte programme I'm installing that is having an effect. I've
installed and removed several times in the past without a problem!

Thank you.

Is there no way I can get back to the original state then? Am I going to
have to reformat my whole machine, or is there some way to avoid this?

Steve;
You can not use Restore Points that are not available.
You will need to find another solution.

If you would post the actual problem in a new thread, someone will probably
be able to help find a solution that does not require a reinstallation.

Steeler,

I had a similar problem today, and a review of the posts showed me,
regrettably, what to do: Unfortunately the only thing that worked for me
to re-establish a correctly working Restoration was to SHUTDOWN Restore
System. Of course, you know that you will loose all your restore points (and
gain a lot of disk space!). I agree with everyone else, from what I have
read from MS you are out of luck going back in time. You wouldn't have
removed "all traces" of that program by the way just by using Restore. You
might also make sure you have allowed enough storage for Restore (maximum is
12%) which can be adjusted in the settings (maximum is 90 days). If you don't
have enough, Restore will go into safemode and not function.
It deletes the oldest restore point also.
