System Restore Hangs - No error cited

I was just trying to use system restore on a friend's PC. I've used it many
times on my own. After picking a restore point, SR ends Windows and starts
the restore files with the long horizontal bar indicator. After a bit, the
blue inidcator starts in the bar but it only gets a little ways and then
stops. I waited 20 minutes and nothing happened and I heard no disk sounds
so I assumed SR was hung up. Since I was outside the OS, I couldn't use the
3 finger salute and it wouldn't let me press the off button on the PC. Had
to turn off power. Started it up again. Said SR had been stopped
abnormally. Picked another restore point and it did the same thing again.
My expereince is that it didn't take that long to restore. Is it normal for
it to take 20 minutes or more? Why would it hang up? How do I get the
system back to where it was? n The OS here is Windows XP, I'm assuming SP2.

Hi,

An abnormal shutdown can easily cause restore point corruption.

When you say "outside the OS" are you referring to Safe Mode or Command
prompt?

Will the system boot to Safe Mode, and did you try restoring from there?

It is not normal for System Restore to take 20 minutes to roll back a
system.

If there is restore point corruption, System Restore will be of no help.
