System Restore File Deletions

When the big hit of virus' came around not too long ago I
had to disable my system restore tool to run some of the
anti-virus tools. Not knowing that when you disable it
and re-enable it, you lose all your previous restore
checkpoints. How do you and is it possible to get those
restore points back?

They are gone for good along with the worm/virus that resided within.
