I am using XP home version from 2002 and my system restore does not complete
- I have tried several restore points and they all come back as system was
unable to restore. I tried the TEST suggested in one thread, and that was
successful, but it won't restore past a certain point. I did do a probably
dumb thing and downloaded a test version of a registry cleaner from a website
a month or so ago - it said it only cleaned a few unless you bought the
system, which I didn't, but I'm wondering if I screwed something up because
that's the point past which it won't restore. Also, my hard drive died a few
months ago and I had a new one installed and they also put a swap file in
which I'm totally ignorant about - could this be affecting my system restore
performance? Really appreciate any help anyone can offer - thanks!!

A bit of general advice. Never use any app which claims to fix your
registry. They tend to cause problems which may not show up for weeks. Your
registry will take care oif itself. As for the system restore problem. Try
turning system restore off then back on. This should reset it. You will
loose all restore points but new opnes will be created so don't worry about
it. Whether it fixes the problem or not I can't say if not open
C:\WINDOWS\inf and look for sr.inf. Right click the file and select install.
This will reinstall system restore. You might need to enable show all files
before you can see the folder. Do this in control panel, folder options,
view tab and click show all files and folders and uncheck hide protected
operating system files. Ignore the warning, you can re-enable the settings
later. One of these above should get system restore working again. If not
you will probably need to do a repair install. Search google if needed there
are plenty of sites that will show you how to do it.
