System Restore Errors 0xC0000043 & 56

I have a 15 month old Toshiba Notebook with pre-installed XP Home, but in the
last month my restore points have disappeared 10 times. I found the subject sr
errors in my event viewer today with the explantion: "The System Restore filter
encountered the unexpected error '0xC0000056' while processing the file.... It
has stopped monitoring the volume." (Most of the files have a "lnk" extension.)

I went to MS Help and Support which said: "Explanation: System Restore
encountered an error when backing up a protected file. This error causes System
Restore to stop copying files and purge all existing restore points. System
Restore will automatically restart after the next restore point is created."
And it said to create a restore point manually, which will restart System
Restore.

I would very much appreciate a better solution if there is one available. TIA.

Hi,

Sometimes, the solution is to totally disable System Restore, reboot, then
reenable it. This will lose all existing restore points, but should get it
working again. Start/run services.msc, locate the SR service and doubleclick
it. Click the stop button, then set the startup type dropdown to disabled.
Click apply/ok, then reboot. Reverse the steps to restart it.

Hi,

I tried turning SR on and off & rebooting 3 or 4 times in the month that I
realized the restore points were disappearing but the problem always came back.
I started manually checking SR daily to check for restore points and I did
nothing unusual or had no computer problems before the disappearance. Once SR
ran well 10 days, and then a daily error for a few days. Most of the lnk files
started with http, so it may be something that occurs while I am online. I
listen to lots radio streams, and I'll check my IE history to see if it's
related to a particular stream or site. Thanks.
