When I click on Microsoft System restore under windows recovery, I get nothing. The properties say it is unkown protocal and the address is javascript:void(0). I Have a valid restore point to go to, but I can't access the page that says restore to an earlier date.

Check that the System Restore shortcut showsTarget
%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe and
Start in: %HOMEDRIVE%%HOMEPATH%

What do you mean by "under Windows recovery" as far as where you're trying
to launch System Restore? Normally SI is launched from the System Tools
folder and would not have any javascript involvement. Have you tried
executing the rstrui.exe program directly? (You may have to change Windows
Explorer to show hidden files and folders via Tools./ Folder Options / View
first.) If that fails then you might want to run sfc to check system files.
Also, are you sure you have no viruses or spyware problems?

Kellys-korner is well respected and has a lot of valuable items. A
particular patch may not always fix a problem, but they are generally safe.
If that doesn't do it (let us know what happens), here's a other few ideas.
I've found that disabling System Restore, rebooting and re-enabling
sometimes fixes unusual problems (possibly, I suspect by removing a damaged
data item in the System Volume Information folder). This would, however,
cause the loss of any past restore points. There are quite a few MS
bulletins on SI problems, but your blank screen launch is unusual. You
might also see if there's any difference in Safe Mode.

It is actually a HP recovery shortcut that the restore command is under.
Even executing rstrui.exe directly from system32, only brings up a blank
page. Not sure about the viruses, but everything else works fine. Ever
hear of patches from kellys-korner? Are they gennerally safe? She has one
@ # 289 that I downloaded but did not execute.
