I just recently purchased a external hard drive to back up my "C" drive.
After doing so It informed me that my system contained 4 errors. I tried to
run the reinstall system disc to repair it and was told that my operating
system was newer than the one on the reinstall disc. How can this be? It's
the same disc I got when I purchased the system. Do I need a new reinstall
disc? If so, how do I get one? It is a Dell Deminsions running XP. Thanks for
any help you can offer. If I'm on the wrong forum which one should I be on.

The only things I can think of is that you attempted to upgrade Windows
instead of reinstalling, or you installed SP2 since you bought the computer.

You don't specify the types of errors that your backup program detected, but
I suspect that they are hard drive errors, not Windows errors. If so, you
don't need to reinstall Windows. You should run chkdsk.exe to fix the
errors. Look up chkdsk in Windows Help and Support for instructions on
running it. If you can't find it, write back.

Rojo. I just ran chkdsk.exe but did not learn anything. The errors listed on
the drive are 1) C:/windows/prefetch/ssflwbox.scr-00c6f4bf.pf
-- 2) software distribution/event cache{730beab5-ca15-4a7b-8056-16e138e95
3) system32/wbem/repository/fs/index.btr
mapping.ver
objects.data
Does this mean anything to you.If so how do I correct it? In running
chkdsk.exe, I click "Run" and entered chkdsk.exe. A black box came up and
checked some things, but I didn't understand it. All of your help will be
appreciated. James

MyComputer, right-click your XP (C:) drive,
Properties/Tools/Error-Checking/CheckNow/check AutomaticallyFix.../OK for
boot check.
