System Recovery

I have an XP system (dell oem) that does not boot because
\\system32\config\system is corrputed or missing. I suspect something hosed
the registry. Microsoft KB Article ID 307545 details how to fix it. Rather
than go through this, would it work if I put the hard drive in another XP
system as a slave drive and then just tried to read the data contents off it?
I don't mind doing a reinstall if I can just save the data.
